19 June 2009

The back verandah at NASAM PJ has now been converted into a beautiful, light and airy enclosed space. The renovation, sponsored by BP Malaysia Bhd, has added about 1,000 sq ft to the centre. It will be used primarily for exercises which require a more tranquil atmosphere eg floor exercises, yoga and qigong. An official opening by the Chief Executive of BP Malaysia is in the pipeline.

Renovation works at NASAM Kuantan House are due for completion by end June 2009, with its soft opening slated for early July 2009.

Although not operational yet, the sub-committee of NASAM Kuantan swung into fundraising action through a “Bake ‘n Buy” event organized by The Inner Wheel Club of Kuantan. Held at East Coast Mall on 13 June, the ladies from The Inner Wheel Club baked an assortment of cakes, cookies, etc for sale. More than RM9,000 was raised which will go toward the purchase of therapy equipment for the club. Well done.

Lending support at the event were Physios Sujan and Udayashankar, the latter of whom has been undergoing training at NASAM PJ and will commence work at NASAM Kuantan by end June 2009.

On 15 June, NASAM PJ’s Speech Therapist, Dyani and Rehab Coordinator, Tracy presented powerpoint briefings to David-Boyd Thomas, Director, Head of Community Affairs, UBS Asia Pacific and Leong Fee Yee, Managing Director of UBS Securities Malaysia Sdn Bhd. Dyani talked about her work with strokees in NASAM PJ to support our request for sponsorship of software and equipment for speech therapy. Tracy gave feedback on the two training courses, conducted in 2007 and 2008, sponsored by UBS.

The Truly Loving Company (TLC) is sponsoring an Art Therapy Programme (ATP) for NASAM PJ strokees. The ATP will be conducted by three young architects Jonathan Teoh, Teh Beng Siang and Fabian Tan on Saturday 11 July 2009 from 9am – 3.30pm. (Lunch will be served.)

The idea for this programme was developed as a fun and sustainable form of stroke

rehabilitation therapy. It is targeted at strokees who wish to discover and develop their creative abilities and at the same time
encourage greater application of motor
skills and to improve hand-eye co-ordination.

We would like to invite volunteers and carers to assist the strokees
during this one-day session to share
the journey of discovery with them in a
fun and positive way.

The programme also aims to have the strokees produce commercial-grade paintings within a day with expert help from the three seasoned architects. Strokees with loads of enthusiasm are to register their interest. The first eight strokees to sign
on will be chosen for this programme.
