NASAM STROKE FORUM SERIES
On 8 May 2011, NASAM's Stroke Forum series kicked off in Malacca. Entitled "Stroke: Strikes One Member, Affects Whole Family", the event drew an audience of 50 from the local community. Early arrivals watched the NASAM video and also had a chance to view the rehab equipment that was on display.
Dr Uduman Ali, Consultant Neurologist from Hospital Melaka, started off with an informative lecture on "Introduction to Stroke" in which he gave an overview about stroke and more importantly highlighted the risk factors and what people could do to minimise the probability of being stricken. This was followed by Cecilia Santiago, Speech Therapist for NASAM Ampang, who spoke about communication challenges and difficulties of swallowing faced by strokees. Rehab Manager Annie Ng, rounded off the proceedings with Rehabilitation after Stroke with some focus on the NASAM approach. A strokee and a carer from NASAM Malacca also shared their experiences with the audience.
The next two forums will be held on 15 May 2011 at Shahzan Inn, Kuantan and on 22 May 2011 at Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
Do encourage your friends and family to attend.
SPEECH STROKEES STRIDE OUT
Seven NASAM PJ speech strokees, carers, students and volunteers recently went on an outing to Paddington House of Pancakes at Mid Valley City. Apart from the sweet and savoury varieties, the restaurant even did a special vegetarian dish, soups and pasta to accommo- date some strokees' dietary requirements.
The goal of the outing is for the strokees to build their confidence in going out into the community, communicating with new people by ordering their food as well as remembering what they ordered and ensuring they got the right dish. Overall, it was a good experience for all concerned.
NASAM AMPANG's GOLF CHARITY EVENT
The bright, sunny morning on 10 May 2011 was the perfect day for NASAM Ampang's charity golf event at Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan Awam. The event was graced by DYMM Tunku Ampuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Aisah Rohani Bt Tunku Besar Mahmud. There were 8 flights of 31 golfers. Strokees En Mahbob Osman and En Mohd Shariffudin came for the 10.30am tee off.
AMBank sponsored goodie bags for the players while NASAM Ampang sponsored golf pouch and eco bags. Alice Choon of Poh Kong sponsored RM35,000 jewellery for a hole-in-one, but sadly nobody won it. Datin Shirley Chan of Great Times Sdn Bhd sponsored a Claudia Patrick watch worth nearly RM5,000 for the champion golfer.
After the game there was lunch, prize giving and lucky draw. Nearly everybody won prizes. NASAM's Founder Chairman, Janet Yeo, gave a short speech about NASAM. There was music and singing by Tuanku and Tunku Putri Intan Shafinaz of Kedah. The function ended at 3.30pm. A total of RM60,000 was raised from this charity event. NASAM Ampang's sub-committee Chairman, Tunku Rafidah, thanks her committee for a job well done.
A MARATHON EFFORT
Nine NASAM Sabah strokees and six from NASAM Ampang joined the Borneo International Marathon 2011 (BIM) which was held in Kota Kinabalu on 1 May 2011. Running with them were physios from NASAM Sabah, NASAM Sabah's sub-committee Chairman, Physiocare's physios and volunteers. NASAM Sabah's strokees ran in the 10 Km category while NASAM Ampang did the 2 Km race, which were flagged off at 6 a.m. and 6.15 a.m. respectively. After training very hard for the past few months, the 1st few km was easy for most of the strokees. It was only after the 5km mark that they needed help and were pushed in wheelchairs. Mdm Agnes reached the finishing line first followed by other strokees. All reached the finishing line before 8.30am. Although very tiring, everyone had a good time nonetheless. BIM raised more than RM10,500 for NASAM Sabah through donations received.
Early rehabilitation is crucial. Every stoke survivor must seek rehabilitation treatment as soon as possible. More »
