Physiotherapy

What it is

Physiotherapy, conducted by physiotherapists, helps a person return to the highest possible level of physical function. Concentrating primarily on controlled and balanced movement, increased strength and stamina for greater mobility, physiotherapy lays the necessary physical groundwork on which further functional and independence can be developed.

How it works

It is crucial that a stroke survivor be referred to a physiotherapist as soon as possible. The sooner physiotherapy starts; the faster the brain relearns normal movements, thus reorganizing the sensory and motor pathways of the brain.

Physiotherapy comprises many different methods to help the stroke survivor relearn how to balance and move. These include practising movements, or part of a movement, to encourage both sides of the body to work together. Correct positioning is important to ensure that muscles and joints remain flexible and pain free.

Role of physiotherapist

The physiotherapist will assess the stroke survivor and plan an appropriate programme to aid the recovery of normal movements. The assessment process is ongoing. Short and long term goals are discussed with the stroke survivor throughout rehabilitation, taking into account previous lifestyles and home environment.
