FACT FILE

Launched March 4, 2017 – a world first – at the Panasonic National Sports Complex, Shah Alam, Selangor.

  • Second instalment – October 19 & 20, 2019 at the same venue.
  • Both events officiated by YABhg Tun Jeanne Abdullah (wife of former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Badawi), Patron of the Malaysian Paralympic Council (MPC)
  • In tandem with World Stroke Day (celebrated on October 29 every year).
  • The Stroke Games logo is a torch in vibrant hues of purple and pink. The design represents a stroke survivor’s rise to the challenges of ‘life after stroke’. It denotes determination, inner strength, courage, hope and distinctly shows the final strides made to overcome the odds and emerge as a champion.
  • NASAM, which is an NGO, hosts the Stroke Games every two years through sponsorship and donations.

REASONS FOR EVENT

• It was born out of a belief that sports and playing games heal the brain.
• Because sporting events can be modified to enable stroke survivors to participate within the scope of their abilities.
• It is in line with NASAM’s mission to continue nurturing a new beginning for survivors through holistic stroke-specific programmes.
• Showcases remarkable possibilities of recovery and is a celebration of life after a stroke.

Stroke Games 2019

Pre-Games event launch by YB Hannah Yeoh Deputy Minister, Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, on January 15, 2019.

  • Later in October about 800 partcipants were involved in the two-day games.
  • Five guest teams also partcipated in the vibrant opening ceremony.
  • VVIP team which also officiated was made up of YB Hannah Yeoh, Dato Wan’ Hashimi Albakri, Acting Group CEO of Sime Darby Property Berhad and Mr Stuart Milne, CEO of HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad.
  • Youngest athlete was 15-year old Lee Yong Xian from Kuantan while the oldest at 81, was Mariya Pillay from Malacca.
  • Stroke champions participated in 25 events – 19 individual and 6 team challenges.
  • Foreign guests were the World Stroke Organisation and the Singapore National Stroke Association.
    Both participated in the opening ceremony with local guest teams from Hospital Rehabilitasi Cheras, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre and ReGen Rehab Hospital.
  • Overall champions, in a tie, were Malacca and Petaling Jaya while Perak was runner up.
  • For 2019, the biggest donors were HSBC Bank Malaysia, Yayasan Sime Darby and TA Group Berhad
  • Overall champions were PJ and Malacca  while Perak come in third place.

Stroke Games 2017

Was a pioneering initiative by NASAM.

  • A one-day event involving about 500 participants.
  • The youngest athlete was Tasmine Teh, aged nine, from Petaling Jaya while the oldest was Lok Chai Yuen, 84, from Kuantan.
  • There were 17 sporting activities – four individual and 13 group challenges.
  • Overall champions were PJ, with Sabah in second place and Ampang and Perak sharing third place
